Genealogy
One
of the most popular and fast-growing uses of our museum is genealogical
research.
Our
staff, headed by genealogist Walter Throne, has spent countless
days clipping obituaries from old issues of the Hazleton newspaper
and has catalogued them.
We
have a growing collection of resources to aid in local genealogical
research. Among them:
A limited
number of volumes of the Report of the Department of Mines, listing
deaths and accidents at anthracite mining operations.
A collection
of yearbooks from all area high schools, including those that no
longer exist. Hazleton High School yearbooks date back to 1910.
A recent
addition is a volume listing tombstone inscriptions from the old
portion of St. Gabriel's cemetery (those erected on graves before
1910).
A collection
of vital statistics about Hazleton area men who served in the Civil
War. This listing, compiled by our genealogist, Walter Throne, includes
dates of birth and death, occupations, wives' names and other biographical
data.
An
alphabetical collection of obituaries from the Hazleton Standard-Speaker,
dating back to the early 1980s.
Another
recent addition is a collection of Hazleton Area School District
records acquired when the district moved its administrative offices
from the former Walnut Street School.
Genealogist Walter Throne does research when possible, upon request.
